The honest answer most car audio shops won't give you: it depends on what you actually want it to sound like.
A "system" can mean spending $500 to swap your front speakers, or it can mean $15,000 for a competition-grade SPL build. Most people land somewhere between $1,500 and $5,000 — but where you land depends on what you're trying to fix.
Here's the real pricing in Las Vegas in 2026, broken down by what you actually get.
Level 1: "It just needs to sound less bad" — $500–$900. Front component speaker swap. Usually a basic Focal, Alpine, or JL Audio set. Powered by your factory amp or a small 4-channel aftermarket amp. Massive improvement over factory junk. No subwoofer.
Level 2: "I want some bass" — $1,200–$2,200. Add a single 10" or 12" subwoofer with its own amp to a Level 1 system. Usually mounted in a custom-built enclosure that fits the trunk or under the rear seat.
Level 3: "I want it to sound great" — $2,500–$5,000. Component speakers all the way around (front and rear), dedicated subwoofer with proper amp, full OEM integration so the factory head unit and CarPlay still work, sound deadening on all four doors, professional tuning.
Level 4: "I want it to be the system" — $5,000–$15,000+. Reference-grade components (think JL Audio C7 or Focal Utopia), dual subwoofers with custom enclosures, multi-amp setup, processor-based tuning, full sound deadening package.
Component grade. A pair of $200 entry-level components vs. $1,500 reference components is a real difference, both in cost and in sound.
Number of channels. Each amplified channel adds amplifier cost and labor cost.
Custom enclosure work. A subwoofer in a $50 prefab box sounds different from one in a custom-fit enclosure built for your specific trunk dimensions.
OEM integration complexity. Some vehicles (Tesla, BMW, Mercedes) have factory amplifiers and digital signal processing that complicate aftermarket integration.
Sound deadening. Doing all four doors properly adds $400 in materials and labor. Most shops skip this.
Tuning. A great system installed and never tuned will sound mediocre.
Three things separate a system that sounds incredible from one that sounds like aftermarket noise:
Sound deadening. Doors are sheet metal with plastic panels. Without sound deadening, your speakers fight the resonance of the door. Bass leaks. Mid-range gets muddy. Highs get harsh.
OEM integration. Splicing into factory wiring is what cheap shops do. It introduces noise, can void factory warranties, and breaks features like steering wheel controls and CarPlay.
Tuning. Every car cabin is acoustically different. A system that sounds great in a Range Rover will sound bright in a Porsche.
That's $950+ of value built into every system $1,500 and up. The reason: a system without sound deadening, proper integration, and tuning will sound 30–40% worse than the same system done properly.
If you're at the $500–$900 entry level, the value stack doesn't apply (the math doesn't work — $950 in free upgrades on a $500 build is just a free build). Entry-level installs are clean, quality work — but they're focused on a single fix (usually swapping the front speakers), not a full system buildout.
If you want the value stack, build at the $1,500+ level. The difference in sound is dramatic.
Tesla Model 3 — front and rear component upgrade, sub, OEM integration: $3,800
Range Rover Sport — full system with reference components, dual subs: $7,200
Toyota Tacoma — component speakers and 10" sub: $1,650
Porsche 911 — front components only (Burmester replacement): $2,400
Lifted F-150 — full audio with marine-grade components in cab and bed: $4,500
Ford Bronco — component upgrade with sub for soft-top compatibility: $2,900
